Prime Minister and A.P. Moller–Maersk Chairman discuss policy certainty, private-sector alignment and the Port of Colombo’s growing trade role
Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya met Mr Robert M. Uggla, Chairman of A.P. Moller – Maersk on 21 January at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The discussion focused on deepening private-sector collaboration and identifying concrete opportunities for Maersk to expand its presence in Sri Lanka. Both sides emphasised the importance of predictable policy and stable operating conditions as a foundation for long-term investment decisions.
The Port of Colombo has become a critical node for regional trade, handling a record 8.3 million TEUs in 2025, a rise of more than six per cent from the previous year. Its ability to manage large vessel calls and fast turnaround times has reinforced its standing as a key transhipment and gateway port on major East-West shipping routes. This performance underlines Colombo’s practical value to shipping lines and logistics operators seeking consistent throughput and operational reliability.Maersk’s services in Sri Lanka now extend beyond shipping alone, covering integrated logistics and supply-chain support that can complement Colombo’s growing capacity.
The Davos meeting signals a shared interest in strengthening this partnership, with both sides looking at how Maersk’s network and expertise can support Sri Lanka’s trade ambitions and the port’s ongoing development.
