Truth behind the news on a patient with suspected COVID-19 at SLPA

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) emphasizes that the employees and other port users should not be afraid of continuing the operations at the port premises as all precautions against COVID-19 are judiciously positioned

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has been paying attention to the above news which has been circulating in the social media networks in Sri Lanka over the past few days.

Accordingly, when inquiring as to the truthfulness of the incident, this is how the facts are reported.

With the full involvement of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and the navy’s supervision, all the follow-up work has been done on the person who brought this news. The source of the news is a Wharf Operations Executive who has a monthly port license to enter the Colombo Port premises.

He had arrived at the Bandaranaike Terminal (BQ) at the Colombo Port recently to clear the goods.

He is a resident of Wellampitiya and has been a Wharf Operations Executive for a long time. The other Wharf Clerks are well aware of him. It is also revealed that he is a cousin of a woman who was recently infected with coronavirus and admitted to the De Zoysa Maternity Hospital in Colombo.

Immediately after the discovery, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority’s Security Division’s sterilization unit and the Sri Lanka Navy’s Covid 19 Prevention Unit sterilized all the sites where the person was found to be. All persons associated with that person underwent preliminary medical examinations. It has been confirmed that none of them is having symptoms of the disease.

Meanwhile, The Wellampitiya Public Health Inspector had taken steps to quarantine the person. At the request of the Sri Lanka Authority, the person was subjected to a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test. Accordingly, the Director-General of Health Services concludes that the person is not a Covid19 victim. Sri Lanka Ports Authority is satisfied with the recommendation of the government health officials.

At the moment, all the health care practices recommended by the Ministry of Health for the prevention of Covid19 continue in the institute. The Operational Center which has been established to ease the Ports operations continuously coordinates and updates the necessary actions.
