Strengthening Regional Maritime Security: Highlights from the ReCAAP Cluster Meeting in Colombo

The ReCAAP Cluster Meeting, held from 22nd to 25th July 2024 in Colombo, brought together representatives from Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh to address “Preparedness to Combat Piracy, Armed Robbery or Attacks Against Ships and Efforts to Fortify Security in Port Anchorages.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority was represented by Capt. Nirmal Silva, Harbour Master, and Capt. Harsha Weerasuriya, Head of Special Investigations. Their presence highlighted Sri Lanka’s active role in regional maritime security.

The meeting was part of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia, coordinated by the Information Sharing Center of ReCAAP in Singapore. National governance is overseen by the Director General of Merchant Shipping, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, and the Harbour Master of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Admiral Krishnaswamy Natarajan, Executive Director of ReCAAP and former Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, presented an appreciation certificate and plaque to Capt. Harsha Weerasuriya in recognition of his contributions as a presenter during the meeting.

This collaboration reinforces the commitment of Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh to enhancing maritime security and safeguarding shipping routes in the region.
