As the backbone of global trade, with over 80% of goods transported by sea, the maritime industry must prioritise safety measures to ensure the continued flow of goods, services, and economic prosperity. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and environmental challenges, this theme serves as a timely reminder that the future of maritime depends on safe, sustainable, and secure practices.
In this context, the Port of Colombo and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) exemplify how regional ports are responding to the call for enhanced safety while maintaining their roles as key hubs of global trade. As the South Asia’s busiest transshipment centres, handling over 90% of Sri Lanka’s container traffic, the Port of Colombo has invested in modernising its infrastructure and operations to meet international safety standards. The SLPA has integrated advanced technologies, including automated systems and safety protocols, ensuring not only operational efficiency but also a safer environment for workers and vessels. These efforts position the Port of Colombo as a leader in both innovation and maritime safety within the Indian Ocean region.

Seafarers face numerous risks, from hazardous working conditions to extended periods away from home, and the pandemic highlighted the vulnerabilities of this essential workforce.
